Manager of the Central Analytical Facility
The Central Analytical Facility (CAF) at the University of Alabama seeks candidates fill the position of manager of the CAF. It is the responsibility of the Manager to assure that the CAF
fulfills its mission of service in support of the teaching, research and service missions of the University of Alabama. The manager will assure the major research instrumentation is operational and the trained operators use the instrumentation in a safe and productive manner. The manager will supervise the office staff and the technical staff. The manager reports to the Director of the CAF and serves on the Users Advisory Committee to work with the Director and the faculty to recommend policy, assess productivity and plan for the future of the CAF. The manager will market the CAF and its capabilities to internal users (UA research teams) and external users (sister institutions, industry and government laboratories). The manager will works with customers to use the capabilities of the CAF to solve their problems.
The candidate must have a bachelor's degree or higher in a physical science (chemistry, physics, or materials science) or in engineering (chemical engineering, electrical engineering, materials engineering or metallurgical engineering) and at least five (5) years relevant experience in either electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, or atom probe tomography. Furthermore the candidate must have effective verbal and written communication skills and a knowledge of personal computers and word processing, spread sheet and data graphing software.

Instrumentation Specialist
The Central Analytical Facility (CAF) at the University of Alabama seeks candidates fill the position of instrumentation specialist. The instrumentation specialist reports to the Manager of the CAF and is responsible for one of two instrument clusters, either the surface science cluster or the electron microprobe/scanning electron microscope cluster. The surface science cluster has a Kratos 165 Auger/x-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The microprobe/SEM cluster has a JEOL 8600 electron microprobe, and two SEM’s, a Phillips XL30 and a JEOL 7000.
The Instrumentation Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day operation and routine maintenance of their assigned instrument within the Central Analytical Facility. The specialist will assure the instrumentation s working according to specifications, perform routine maintenance, train operators (undergraduate students, graduate students, post docs and external users) in the safe, productive use of the instrumentation and work with internal (UA) and external (other universities, government laboratories and industry) to obtain and interpret data.
The candidate must have an associate's degree in chemical technology, electronics technology or other relevant field and at least five (5) years of relevant experience in an industrial or academic setting. Outstanding candidates would have a bachelor of science in a physical science (chemistry, physics or materials science) or in engineering (chemical engineering, electrical engineering or metallurgical engineering) and at least three (3) years of relevant experience running x-ray photoelectron spectrometers or electron microscopes in an academic or industrial setting.
